5 days left and I have raised $2300

Sunday, November 14, 2010

I have been super busy as of late. I have reached my goal of raising my minimum of $2300. I am very appreciative of each individual that has give to this cause.

Now I just need to pack for this coming weekend and the forecast calls for rain on Saturday and Sunday. Ugh. I need to pack for that as well. Maybe I will get lucky and the weather patterns will change.

Wish me luck!

Running out of time

Sunday, October 24, 2010

Less than four weeks to go. I cannot believe it. The time has just flown by. I have been putting in many hours and miles training which leaves not so much time to post updates.

I will be brief.

Mon. - zero
Tues. - 3 miles
Wed. - 2 miles
Thurs. - 2 miles
Fri. - 3 miles
Sat. - 7 miles
Sun. - 9 miles

weeks total = 26 miles and almost 9 hours of walking. I feel great!

Less than 9 weeks to go

Monday, September 20, 2010

I am running out of time to write on my blog. Many of these posts from now on will be short and to the point. With the kids back in school, dance, and soccer and me walking more and more, working full-time, etc. my time is precious.

This past week I did not walk as much as I hoped for, but at least I was consistent. I was able to walk 6 days this past week for a total of 21 miles and every day hills covered at least half of my miles. That has to count for something.

Monday - 3 miles
Tuesday - 3 miles
Wednesday - 3 miles
Thursday - 0
Friday - 3 miles
Saturday - 3 miles (Julia accompanied me on her scooter, which was fun)
Sunday - 6 miles

Week 13 Training Update 2

Monday, August 30, 2010

Well, I feel I did fairly well this week with training. I did some walking every day this week, either 2, 3, or 5 miles.

Then on Saturday I hiked out in the San Mateo Wilderness with my sister. We walked a total of 8 miles with hills. I did take almost 3 liters and lunch with me so it was a bit of extra weight and good for me.

Last night, I went to the gym for the first time in a long time and ran 2 miles and walked another 1.5.

Grand total for this week? Duh, duh, duh...28.5!!!

Hope I can keep it up. I have a busy week ahead. 12 more weeks to go.

Week 13 Training Update 1

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

So I am off to a good start this week. Yesterday I walked 3 miles during my lunch break at work. Today I woke up at 6am and walked 3 miles before work and then 2 more at lunch.

Monday = 3
Tuesday = 5

grand total - week 13- so far = 8. Woo hoo!

Walking and Running

Sunday, August 15, 2010

Well, I have been getting back into the swing of things. After a long vacation I finally started walking this week. Not much, but it is a start. I walked 3 miles on Thursday and 3 on Friday.

Now on to running. Before children I ran. Before my second child was born I ran. I have not ran much in the past three years. Well that is changing.

On Thursday I incorporated a bit of running with my walking. It will take some time to run long distances again. I was only able to run for a few minutes at a time. I have a long way you to.

A dilemma I have, though, is how do I train for the 3 day event and incorporate running, too. In my opinion, running should be counted as cross-training since different muscles are used or used differently. So the days where I cross-train, I will run instead of walk.

One thing is for sure, I need to step it up. Only 15 weeks to go!

guess what?

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

I have a total of $1933 raised so far! This is awesome! I am so close.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure!

Checking-in

Thursday, July 22, 2010

On-line check-in for the the San Diego walk in November has begun. Check-in is a confirmation that I will be there and be walking. Instead of bringing my own towel to the walk I opted to pay $12 bucks for towel service. I think that will be worth it.

During check-in I also had to watch a safety video and provide an emergency contact and insurance information. I also was able select a tent mate. Since I am not walking with a team I will be given a random tent mate which should be interesting!

Week 21 Training Update

Here is the final total:

Week 21

Monday - 0
Tuesday - 0
Wednesday - 5 miles
Thursday - 5.5 miles
Friday - 3 miles
Saturday - 0
Sunday - 0

Week 21 total= 13.5 miles

Grand total = 21.5 miles

Training Update - Weeks 22 and 21

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Hello. I have officially begun my training and I am keeping tabs.

Week 22 (7 miles total)
I was sick most of this week so I did not do much.

Sunday - 7 miles. (2 miles were done wearing flip-flops. I walked these at the the Highland Games). The other 5 miles were with my sister. We walked around Lake Mission Viejo. This hike has many hills. In fact, the first two miles are are some big hills.

Week 21 (in progress)

Monday - 0
Tuesday - 0
Wednesday - 5 miles
Thursday - 3 miles so far

Since Julia is out of school and I am done with my classes for a while I have a bit more free time. The past few mornings I have been getting a walk in before work from 6-7am. I do three miles. Them at work, during lunch, I walk another 2 miles. So during the week I should be able to do anywhere from 3-5 miles a day at least. I will keep you posted.

Total training miles = 15

all girls need one of these

Friday, June 18, 2010

Hi everyone. I know my posts have not been a common occurrence around here. They will be soon. I have just a few days of my class left and then I will have a bit more free time.

My official 24-weeks of training began 2 weeks ago and I have not done a thing. On Monday will be week 3. I plan on getting the ball rolling. Until then, let's discuss this thing called a Go Girl. I am not sure I can describe it as well as the product page, just go here and read.

My sister and I had a big discussion about the very issue of going to the "bathroom" in the wilderness on one of our hikes. Let's just say it is not as easy for us women as it is for the men out there. After climbing the peak that day, near the end of the hike (this may be too much information) I could barely stand up after squatting because my muscles were so fatigued. Boy, I wish I had one of these for those times.

Also, this would be great for the 3 Day event, don't you think? I mean the idea of 3 days of port-o-potties make me want to stand to pee. Okay. I promise this is the last post about this subject. I have not tried this product, but I think I am going to, maybe.

Go Girl Blog

i'm sore

Monday, May 17, 2010

Hi everyone. Sorry I have been absent from here lately, but I don't have too much to report. Since the walk is not until November I have not done too much training. Don't get me wrong, I have been walking, just not totally and completely regularly.

Saturday I walked a local trail that was 4.6 miles round trip.

Yesterday I was at Disneyland with my oldest child and I have no idea how much or far I walked, but it was a lot. We were there 10 hours and my calves and feet are sore today. Must stretch.

I searched online today hoping to find a walking distance map of the park. It would be so cool to know exactly the distance within the park. I could not find one. There has to be one somewhere. Someone want to create one?

I do not have a Disneyland annual passport, but many people do. It is a great place to walk with so much to see and do.

A beautiful hike

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

I know I have been missing lately, but I have good excuses. Still collecting cans and bottles. Still walking, hiking, etc. I will be back here soon once more things settle.

Check out my post here about a recent hike up Sitton Peak. It was a 10 mile hike with a 2100' elevation gain. It was great!

An Underground Guide to the Breast Cancer Walk

Friday, March 26, 2010

You have to read this. I do not know Larry Roshfeld, but in 2006 he wrote an underground guide to the breast cancer walks...he has done many and crewed them, too. It is a wonderful read and he details and answers questions that we all have. He has created this guide from what he has learned first hand and he wrote about interesting little tidbits and stories.

Some of the Topics included are:
  • training
  • raising money
  • packing
  • sleeping
  • strapping
  • tenting
  • tips while walking
  • feet
  • in camp
  • hydration
  • homework
  • and so much more

There is too much for me to write about so you need to just read it for yourself. Keep this guide handy!

An Underground Guide to the Breast Cancer Walk

IBC

Do you know there are different kinds of breast cancer? Have you heard of Inflammatory Breast Cancer or IBC? IBC is a rare form of breast cancer and only occurs in 1-5% of breast cancers diagnosed in the U.S.
IBC is an extremely aggressive form of cancer and the symptoms, prognosis, and treatment are all different than other forms of breast cancer.

Symptoms may include the breast to be red, swollen, and/or warm and rarely causes a breast lump which in turn may make it harder to diagnose. Other signs are itching, nipple retraction, or breast pain. White blood cells blocking lymph vessels in the skin are what cause the symptoms of IBC.

I am not going to write much more about this since there is SO much to write, but I think it is important to know that breast cancer is not always detected with a "lump" being found. Knowledge is power.
If you would like to learn more click here to read about IBC on the American Cancer Society website, where I retrieved my information.

recycling for the cure

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

My sweet husband took as many bags or cans and bottles as he could fit in his trunk today and turned them into cash. Grand total so far is $17. Woo hoo. We have about 7 more bags to turn in so probably will net about another 20 bucks.

We are off to a great start. I will also be turning this cash into a match from my company so whatever I earn from recycling will double.

Thanks to my parents, James' parents, my co-workers, my sisters, and my friend Julie. Julie started collecting all the bottles and cans from her co-workers to give to me and she handed me five big bags of water bottles this past weekend.

I think I can raise at least 100 dollars easily and turn it into 200 with my companies match since I still have eight more months to go. This really is a painless way to raise some money. Instead of throwing things away just place them in a bag and turn them into cash.

another fundraising milestone

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

I just wanted to let everyone know I have reached my 50 % mark in fundraising. In fact, I have reached 52% for a grand total of $1186.00.

Only $1114.00 to go. Remember this money all goes to Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure and will be used for breast cancer research and other community resources.

Any of the following contributions will work and don't forget I am training to walk 60 miles in 3 days in order to raise this money:

1 person to contribute $1114.00 to this worthy cause
2 people to contribute $ 557.00
1 person to contribute $ 557.00 and then get your company to match this gift
278.5 people to contribute $ 4 (a cup of coffee or lunch for one day)

The possibilities are endless and I can not do this without YOU. You can also purchase my photo cards on Etsy. All proceeds are being donated. See the link on the right side of my page.

fremont canyon, have you seen this part of Orange County?

Sunday, March 14, 2010

I did this hike on Saturday. It was a great workout. The first two hours were all uphill and about three miles one way. For details and pictures click HERE.

going uphill

Friday, March 12, 2010

My daily walks include hills. One of the routes I take at work is half down hill and half uphill. I find walking up hills increases my strength and stamina. It burns more calories, too. I know when I walk in San Diego this year there will be many hills. The route from last year started in Del Mar and went through La Jolla and down to downtown. Have you been to Torrey Pines State Reserve? Enough said. There are some big hills.

This is why I like walking in the wilderness when I can. In South Orange County, where I live, there are a lot of hills. This is good training ground.

Tomorrow, I am going on a hike in the Irvine Land Conservancy, Fremont Canyon area and am very excited about it. The hike is supposed to be 5-6 miles, not terribly long, but with a 1000 foot elevation gain. Should be fun. It will also be an interpretive hike and I will learn a lot about thehistory of the area. I will let you know how it went and of course, I will have some pics to post.

i now tweet

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Okay. I realize in order to raise money or awareness you need people to listen. I also realize the more people I reach out to the better success I will have. With that said, I now have a twitter account. Hopefully, I can reach out to a new audience and raise more money for a worthy cause! If you have an account please follow me. There is a link on the side of my blog. I will try to update it often. Only time will tell if it is worth it. Thanks for your ongoing support.

can you tell I have been busy lately?

Sunday, March 7, 2010

With sick kids, school, housework, regular work, etc. I have not had much time to focus on raising money and training. I need to get back in the swing of things. I was able to take a small walk yesterday in the hills surrounding my home. The pictures I took are beautiful. Check them out on my other blog.
My goals for this week are to hit the gym at least three times. I will also walk on my lunch breaks at work.

I am still working on my designs, although I still have some work to do. I will be selling them at Printfection and CafePress. Here is a sneak peek. What do you think?

The stores will up and running in next few weeks.

another fundraising update

fundraising update

Thursday, February 4, 2010

I am really excited to be participating in this event. Anyone I hear from who has participated in past years can not say enough good things and how amazing it is.

So far, I have been very successful with raising money. Luckily, I have had many people contribute to this cause and support my walk.

Most of the money raised has been online contributions by individuals. I have also sold over $50 in cards and have received several offline donations.

I have also raised $213.00 writing online reviews using Insider Pages.

My family is also collecting bottles and cans to recycle. I expect to raise 100-200 dollars that way.

My girls and I have a coin jar at home in which we through any spare change in there. It is really cute to see them find a quarter in the couch and go run and put it in the jar. I will keep you posted on how much is in there at the end of this.

I have made some handmade cards to sell on Etsy. I am in the process of designing some tshirts for sell on CafePress and Printfection. I have plans to have a yard sell some time in the next 6 months and I have a few things to sell on Ebay.

Today I read a blog post here. Leanne...the Walker wrote a post about using Facebook for fundraising. It is difficult to ask people for money, but if you ask many, many people for less money you may have great success. So I tried it and so far...in 1 hour I have had 3 contributions made totaling $78!

Thank you all who have contributed! I truly appreciated it!

Insider Pages - Fundraiser Final Total $213.00

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Here is a message from Insider Pages.

Congratulations on completing your Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure - T-Lehman Fundraiser. Here are the final totals for your group:

Total Reviews: 200

Fundraiser Total: $213.00

Woo Hoo!

you say hike I say walk

Saturday, January 23, 2010

My sisters and I went on an urban hike today. There was debate whether this is considered a hike or a walk. Kristi the hiker, says it is a hike. I am okay calling it either a walk or a hike. Lori says we can call it a wike. I say we can call it a halk. Whatever we call it, we had plenty of time to mull it over. A hike is a long walk, no. How long is long?

We started at the corner of Margarite and Vista Del Lago. The total walk was 5.4 miles according to google pedometer. The first two miles were on Vista Del Lago to Alicia and back. It appears there was an elevation gain of about 500 feet.

Ground decor on Alicia side of lake.

Click here to see a map of the hike.

Next it was an approximate 3 mile walk around the lake. We completed the walk in about one hour and 45 minutes.

Karen, this photo is for you. Obligatory shoe shot

a few steps closer

Thursday, January 21, 2010

I have reached 31% of my $2300 goal. I thank each and every person who has contributed. I truly appreciate it. If you know someone who would like to contribute please pass my information along.

WOW!

Sunday, January 17, 2010

So I have the small task of raising $2300 this year in support of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. It seems like a lot, but people do this all the time. There is money out there. Going to the movies costs over 10 bucks a shot. Instead put that money in a jar and donate it. Simple as that.

Anyways, want some inspiration? Check out this lady here. She has raised more money then anyone else for breast cancer. Over one million dollars and 100 walks. Read her story. It is amazing. Did I forget to mention she is 70 years old? She is a reminder that we all have time and we can all give and we can all do anything we set our minds to.

Wow!

ever wonder how far you walked?

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Have you see the Google pedometer. It is a great tool and easy to use. Go here and give it a try. I now know the distance I am walking every day. Today I went on an early walk at the beach. Total distance = 4.7 miles.

never too early to begin training

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Thanks to everyone so far who have given their time or money in support of me and this cause. I truly appreciate it!!

I have 10 months until the walk, but I need to get in training mode. I have taken at least one long walk each weekend so far and have started walking 30 minutes each day.

A few weeks ago I went on a 5.5 mile hike with my good friend in Aliso and Wood Canyon Wilderness Park. It was a beautiful day and I snapped some great photos.

First Fundraiser Event - Insider Pages

Saturday, January 2, 2010

This is such an easy fundraiser I almost cannot believe it. I have signed up with Insider Pages to write reviews. Insider pages hosts fundraising events and pays groups to write reviews of local businesses. Your only investment is time, no money. Spending a little time to write some reviews is really worth it since a decent amount of money can be raised.

I have already raised over $123.00.

The fundraiser only runs for 3 weeks so I need your help.

Here is a link to my fundraiser page for that site.
http://www.insiderpages.com/fundraisers/Susan-G-Komen-3-Day-for-the-Cure-T-Lehman-1001

It is easy to sign-up. You can write a few reviews every day or on your laptop while watching tv.

Don't forgetthe fundraiser ends on 1/22/09. I would like to raise over $400 at least.

Thanks in advance!
